Earth Day

Happy Earth Day to you, Happy Earth Day to you, Happy Earth Day Dear Planet…

April 22nd marks the 54th annual Earth Day which was first held in 1970. The event was conceived at the 1969 UNESCO Conference in San Francisco by American environmental and peace activist John McConnell. Intended to promote and support environmental protection, Earth Day is now a global phenomenon with more than 1 billion people participating in events across 193 countries.

The official theme of 2024 is “Planet vs. Plastics” but ultimately it is a day to celebrate any activity that promotes greater environmental awareness and positive action. And while the 22nd is Earth Day itself, activity often continues throughout the whole week.

But in these times of frequent headlines about climate change and environmental protests it is all too easy to feel eco-anxiety but not know what to do about it. So, what can you do?

A few simple positive actions to consider:

  1. Sign the Earth Day Global Plastics Treaty (https://action.earthday.org/global-plastics-treaty)
  2. Think about your own use of single use plastics – could you make a simple change like using a refillable water bottle instead of buying single use plastic ones?
  3. Organise and register a clean-up. You might find it to be a fun family and community activity (https://www.earthday.org/actions/register-a-cleanup/)
  4. Of course, where you can’t avoid packaging, try and ensure that everything that can be, is recycled.
  5. Repair, not replace. We have become so used to cheap consumer goods and constant technological upgrades. Sometimes we easily slip into the mindset of replacing an item that breaks or fails; but could it be repaired? Why not see if there is a REPAIR CAFÉ near you? https://www.repaircafe.org/en/
  6. Consider buying used or refurbished items. Giving a previously used item a second life is another great way of reducing the waste of energy and materials resources. This is especially true of technology like mobile phones which use precious and difficult to extract metals and minerals in their manufacture. Huge amounts of materials and often carbon-derived energy go in to manufacturing products that are too frequently thrown away and replaced without exploring the repair options. In many cases it might seem that the manufacturers don’t want us to repair items as it may not be easy or seem as cost effective as buying a new one from them.

This wasteful approach is not only bad for the planet but does not make financial sense to us. That is why we specialise in the highest quality, pristine condition, fully refurbished smartphones.

With about 80% of the environmental impact of a smartphone being generated during its manufacture, refurbishing a device and giving it a second life represents a huge environmental benefit.

In fact, when choosing refurbished over a new smartphone has between 80-90% less of a negative impact on the environment over their typical life of use. The stats on Carbon emissions and Raw Materials use are equally striking too.

C02-e for a brand-new smartphone over its typical life is approximately 85.2kg, whereas this figure for refurbished is only 7.61kg! And a refurbished smartphone uses less than 10% of the Raw Materials of a new one with 25.3kg being used compared to 285.6kg for new.

Choosing a refurbished phone is not only better for the planet, but also for your finances. Despite many people not being able to tell our refurbished devices from new, they certainly notice the difference in the lower prices!

In recognition of Earth Day you can now save more with £10.00 off any of our pristine, fully refurbished and warranted smartphones using code Earth10 at https://moquo.store/ Offer valid until 30/04/2024

Happy Earth Day to you!
